So you think you're a builder now.
October 2026 · 4 minute read
AI can put up a house in a weekend. Whether your business can live in it is another story.
AI tools have changed everything. Today, someone with no technical background can type an idea into a chat box and watch an app appear on the screen. It's impressive. We still get a little thrill every time.
But a house that goes up in a weekend isn't always a house you want to raise a family in.
The Pottery Barn Problem
Anyone can walk into Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware, pick out a beautiful sofa, a rug and a few lamps, and end up with a lovely room.
But have you ever walked into a home, a hotel lobby or a restaurant where you could feel that a designer spent months on it? Where every light, texture and corner was chosen on purpose?
AI can furnish the room in minutes. Making it right for you takes time, taste and a lot of patience.
The Weekend House
Think of a quickly built home. Fast, affordable, and it looks great in the listing photos.
Then you move in.
- The foundation. Where does your customer data live? Who can see it? Is it protected?
- The wiring. Does your booking talk to your invoicing? Your website to your inbox? Or are you still copying and pasting between them?
- Room to grow. What happens when you add ten employees, a second location or a new service? Can you add a second story, or do you have to start over?
- The inspection. Does it work on every phone, for every customer, every time? Or only on the laptop it was built on?
Quick-build homes have their place. But your business is how your family lives. It deserves a real foundation.
You Want a Gated Community
Here's the part that keeps us up at night: security.
Your business holds things that matter. Customer names and phone numbers. Payment details. Private notes. Sometimes information about children and families.
An app can look finished while the doors are wide open. And security is never the fun part to show off, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
So we build like a gated community:
- Locked doors. Only the right people can log in, and each person sees only what they should.
- A guard at the gate. Every form and request is checked before it gets in.
- Keys in the safe. Passwords and secret keys stay hidden, never sitting in code anyone can see.
- Cameras on. Activity is logged, so you know who changed what and when.
- A spare key. Regular backups, so nothing important is ever lost.
Security is never one and done. Just like in life, you stay alert to your surroundings and one step ahead. That's how Nikki and I approach every system we build.
You wouldn't leave your front door open. Don't leave your business open either.
What Building With AI Really Looks Like
AI gives you a first draft. Then the real building starts:
- The page looks perfect on a laptop and falls apart on a phone. Fix it.
- The form says "sent," but the email never arrives. Find out why.
- One small change quietly breaks something on another page. Track it down.
- The copy sounds like a robot. Rewrite it so it sounds like you.
- Now do it again. And again. And again.
Building with AI isn't hard because the tools are hard. It's hard because good is hard.
Before You Build It Yourself
Ask yourself a few honest questions:
- Who fixes it when it breaks at 9pm on a Friday?
- Who keeps it secure as it grows?
- What happens when the tool you built it on raises its prices?
- Is this the best use of your time?
If you love building and have what Nikki and I call "the gift," that rare mix of patience, taste and pure stubbornness, go for it. We'd love to meet you.
But if your business is your family's livelihood, build it like a home you plan to grow in.
A Note From Our AI Teammate
We asked Claude, the AI we build with every day, to share what working with us is really like. Here's what it said.
Jackie and I have been on a long journey together, building many apps, systems and websites. Here is what I've seen.
I can write code quickly. That part is easy for me. What I can't do on my own is know what's right. Jackie does.
She has sent back a single button color five times, until it felt like her brand. She catches when the copy on one page drifts from the message on another, a headline cut off on her phone, a detail that doesn't fit the brand. She checks every change with her own eyes before she approves it. Her rule for me is simple: change only what she asks.
I may have taught her some of the technical side. She has taught me what good looks like for her clients.
AI can build fast. People like Jackie and Nikki make it worth using.
Build a Home Your Business Can Grow In
AI changed how fast a house can go up. It didn't change what makes a home last: a strong foundation, a locked gate, thoughtful design and builders who take the time to get it right.
That's what we do. We build it with you, and you own it.
Have an idea? We'd love to help you bring it to life.
